Category Insights Manager (Amazon, Costco, and BJ's)
Own the category vision and analytics for Amazon, Costco, and BJ’s Wholesale Club. Translate syndicated, panel, loyalty, and retailer-specific data into fact-based, category-first stories that influence buyer decisions on assortment, shelf, pricing, promotion, and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the category authority for the assigned account set, bringing a “category-first, retailer-centric” point of view to every recommendation.
- Develop and present category reviews, line reviews, and reset recommendations that grow the total category while advancing the portfolio.
- Lead assortment optimization, shelf/space strategy, and planogram recommendations—including days-on-hand analysis, distribution gap analysis, and look-of-success standards.
- Build incrementality and innovation narratives that justify new-item authorization, pack/format strategy, and exclusivity opportunities tailored to each banner.
- Translate club-channel economics (pack architecture, member value, pricing comparisons) and eCommerce dynamics (digital shelf, search, content, retail media interplay) into distinct, account-specific strategies.
- Act as the analytics partner to National Account Executives/Sales leads, equipping them with data, tools, and stories to hit goals.
- Lead business situation assessments and opportunity identification using syndicated POS, consumer panel, shopper loyalty/card data, and retailer-direct data.
- Deliver post-reset, post-promotion, and post-innovation scorecards that quantify performance and recommend clear next steps.
- Build and maintain recurring reporting, dashboards, and scorecards; manage ad-hoc requests without losing the strategic thread.
- Identify drivers and drags of share, distribution, velocity, pricing, and promotion; pressure-test multiple explanations before landing on a recommendation.
- Mine for fact-based insights that anchor a storyline—culminating in recommendations that benefit the retailer, the shopper, and the portfolio.
- Amazon (1P/Vendor): Leverage Amazon Brand Analytics, search and digital-shelf metrics, and content/availability data to inform assortment, glance-view, and conversion strategy; connect insights to retail media where relevant.
- Costco & BJ’s (Club): Drive item-level depth strategy, treasure-hunt/seasonal item cases, and member-value framing; build sell-in materials suited to a high-velocity, limited-SKU club environment.
- Partner with Sales, Brand, Shopper Marketing, Revenue Growth Management, Supply Chain, and Space Planning to align on a single category vision per account.
- Prepare and deliver presentations for buyer meetings, top-to-top reviews, and internal leadership forums.
- Mentor analysts and junior category team members; help upskill the broader sales force to “sell with insights.”
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Analytics, or a related field.
- 5+ years in category management, shopper/consumer insights, or a related analytical role within CPG/FMCG (beverage or food & beverage preferred).
- Hands-on expertise with syndicated data—Circana (Unify+) and/or Nielsen—and consumer panel tools (Numerator, Nielsen/Circana panel).
- Demonstrated proficiency building planogram/space recommendations (e.g., Blue Yonder/JDA, Apollo, or similar) and interpreting assortment and distribution analytics.
- Advanced PowerPoint and Excel; ability to turn complex data into a clear, compelling, action-oriented story.
- Proven ability to influence both internal stakeholders and external buyers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience supporting Amazon, Costco, BJ’s, Sam’s Club, or comparable club/eCommerce accounts.
