UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction is seeking a temporary Carpenter for a one-year assignment.

About the role

Reporting to the supervisor and lead, this position is responsible for construction, repair, and remodeling related to buildings, scaffolds, framing, sheetrock, concrete formwork, metal and wooden door and jambs, windows, and hardwood floors. This role supports the safe and reliable operation of campus infrastructure and collaborates with supervisors, other trades, contractors, and campus partners to deliver high-quality carpentry services in support of the University community. This is a full-time, on-site position based in the Southwest Zone of the Seattle Campus.

Responsibilities

• Perform carpentry construction and repair work, which may take place in tenant-occupied spaces.
• Construct projects and modifications from blueprints or sketches.
• Develop cost estimates for installations and repairs.
• Install, adjust, repair, and replace building components such as casework, shelving, door and window hardware, or ceiling tiles.
• Collaborate with the lead to discuss proposed project changes before construction.
• Operate hand and power equipment including saws, jointers, lathes, sanders, planers, boring and mortising machines, and other trade-specific tools.
• Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers.
• Load and unload materials and supplies.
• Operate UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment, and personnel to job sites.
• Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status, work progress, and required materials or equipment.
• May instruct semi-skilled workers.
• Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops and partners such as EH&S, Engineering Services, Design Services, Capital Planning & Development, and UW Information Technology.
• Provide excellent customer service through professional and courteous interactions with clients, colleagues, and the campus community.
• Comply with occupational health and safety regulations, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs), and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Adhere to all UW and Facilities Services policies and procedures, including Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
• Support management directives and the vision and values of Facilities Maintenance & Construction (FMC).
• Participate in FMC process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), Lean principles, and employee engagement in continuous improvements.
• Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

Requirements

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter; or full journey status as a carpenter in a union; or four years of applicable work experience (vocational training may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis).
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
• Proficiency with standard productivity software, including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
• Proficiency in concrete formwork, including footings, foundations, walls, slabs, retaining structures, and stairs.
• Proficiency in all types of door hardware, including electrical, pneumatic, manual, locks, strikes, closers, operators, coordinators, exit devices, and panic hardware.
• Proficiency in fabrication and installation of casework, furniture, and other fixtures.
• Proficiency in finish carpentry, including casework installations, milling, and installation of all types of trim and shelving.
• Proficiency in metal framing, including walls, ceilings, soffits, and openings with hollow metal frames.
• Proficiency with stationary power tools, such as panel and table saws, jointers, sanders, planers, shapers, edge banders, boring, and mortising machines.
• Proficiency in wood framing, including walls, floors, ceilings, stairs, and roofs.

Conditions of Employment

• May be required to accept a variable work shift.
• Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
• Ability to lift and move heavy materials may be required.
• Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
• Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
• Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
• Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (e.g., TB screening, proof of measles inoculation) for work assignments in specific locations.
• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

About the Team

UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure, and land with over 1,100 employees across various fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability, and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services, and Safety. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all UW main campus facilities, including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.

Pay

Annual pay range: $68,928.00 – $91,656.00.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6:55 AM to 3:25 PM. This is a temporary, full-time position (100% FTE) represented by the WFSE Skilled Trades union.
