Position Summary
Overview:
The Carpenter Supervisor oversees skilled work in the production/craft, installation, and maintenance/repair of carpentry at facilities owned/maintained by and throughout Allegheny County, including office buildings, Park Facilities, the Medical Examiner’s, the County Jail, etc. This involves general carpentry, cabinetmaking, building maintenance, flooring, carpeting, ceiling tiles, concrete formwork, furniture repair, finish carpentry, and management of the locksmith.
Duties:
- Reviews Service Requests assigned to Carpenter staff through the Work Order Management System.
- Ensures Service Requests are tracked, completed to a satisfactory level, and closed in the system in a timely manner.
- Assigns work according to staff skills daily.
- Inspects work to ensure it is being completed as assigned and in accordance with carpentry standards.
- Makes material list and gives directions as to procedures and timetable for completion.
- Reviews and estimates jobs (i.e., materials, man-hours, etc.) requested by other departments and determines the scope of work and how the project should be completed.
- Mets and discusses special needs/requests and construction projects with involved outside parties such as contractors, engineers, vendors, special organizations, and other departments.
- Manages records (trade inventory, timesheets, payroll documents, job progress, materials cost, etc.). Prepares accurate reports both manually and electronically, as assigned or required.
- Ensures employees follow policies, procedures, and safe practices.
- Coaches employees as necessary.
- Researches and places part/supply order requests.
- Monitors 24-hour on-call in the event of emergencies (including evenings, weekends, and holidays).
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of:
- Materials, equipment, and tools necessary for cleaning, maintenance, and repair of Carpentry elements of buildings and grounds.
- Other trades and how they relate to Carpentry.
- General familiarity with Allegheny County and its facilities.
- Methods, practices, materials, and tools of the carpentry and locksmithing trade.
- The methods, tools, and materials of the carpentry trade with certification at the journeyman level.
- Quality and uses of various types of wood and composite materials.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Principles and theory of Carpentry.
- Industrial, commercial, and residential carpentry practices.
- Carpentry codes as applicable.
- Skill in:
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel)
- County timekeeping systems.
- Ability to:
- Perform the trade safely and efficiently using a variety of Carpentry tools.
- Direct and supervise subordinate staff.
- Install, alter, repair, maintain, and inspect/locate defects in a variety of carpentry projects.
- Lift up to 100lbs.
- Complete assignments and projects on time.
- Follow policies and procedures of the Department of Facilities Management (and those of facilities at which employees may be assigned, as necessary).
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions, sketches, and blueprints.
- Communicate effectively with management, subordinates, co-workers, government officials, visitors, etc.
- Read and write in the English language.
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Six (6) years of experience in the carpentry trade and proof of Journeyman certification or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.
- Two (2) years of Carpentry supervisory experience is required.
- Candidates must also possess and maintain a valid PA Class C Driver’s license. CDL and OSHA certification desirable, but not required.

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
