CARPENTER II (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)
About the role
The Carpenter II position at California Men's Colony involves supervising, instructing, and working with a crew of incarcerated person helpers. Responsibilities include laying out, directing, and assisting with construction and repair tasks, maintaining job records, preparing reports, and performing other duties as required.
Responsibilities
- Lays out, directs, and assists with the work of construction and repair of various types of buildings, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures.
- Draws working sketches and prepares lists of materials and supplies for jobs and storerooms.
- Maintains job records and prepares reports.
- Prevents escapes and injury by inmates to themselves or others or to property.
- Maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
- Inspects premises and searches incarcerated persons for contraband such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Requirements
May be required to undergo physical and pulmonary examinations for the respirator program, participate in confined space training, and training for maintenance of lethal electric fence structure and components.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in carpentry.
- Two years of full-time paid experience in carpentry or a related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills
Skills required include:
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
- Knowledge of carpentry techniques and materials.
- Ability to operate power tools and equipment.
- Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
