About the role

This position performs skilled carpentry work within the institution under the supervision of the Supervisor of Building Trades. Duties include constructing, repairing, and maintaining buildings, structures, doors, windows, cabinets, shelving, fences, and other institutional facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide guidance to incarcerated workers while ensuring safety, security, and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Read plans and blueprints
  • Inspect completed work
  • Prepare sketches and cost estimates
  • Order materials and equipment
  • Obtain vendor quotes
  • Complete requisitions and work records
  • Prepare reports
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures
  • Complete required administrative duties and training
  • Accurately report time
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange of 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes.

San Quentin Rehabilitation Center is California’s oldest correctional institution, established in 1852 on 432 acres overlooking the bay in Marin County, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The facility includes four large cell blocks, a maximum-security block, health care buildings, and minimum-security dorms.
