About the role
This position is supervised by the Technical Director. The primary focus is on independently completing construction tasks for sets, scenic props, and other production elements in the scene shop.
Responsibilities
- Perform standard construction tasks as assigned.
- Use standard, power, and stationary tools safely.
- Participate in the build, load-in, and strike phases of each theatre production.
- Fabricate work in various mediums including wood, metal, and plastic.
- Construct with cabinetry-level finishing.
- Stay updated on new technologies, processes, products, and industry standards.
- Adhere strictly to Liberty University policies and represent the University in an exemplary manner.
- Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering Liberty University’s Christian model and mission.
- Assist in overseeing student workers, production students, and CSER students.
Qualifications and Credentials
- 1-3 years of experience in theatrical or general carpentry.
- Strong experience in carpentry, understanding different construction methods.
- Expertise in using standard, power, and stationary tools, and safe operation of those tools.
- Working knowledge of all areas of a production/fabrication shop.
- Able to read and understand construction drafting.

- Effective communication both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
- Ability to understand, speak, and write English to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
- Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Computer skills.
- Intuitively able to reason, analyze information, and apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
- Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop to conduct business.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
Working Conditions
The working environment is a climate-controlled setting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate. Occasional outdoor work may be required.
Driving Requirements
- If required to travel, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be needed for travel.
- Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.
