Carpenter/Painter

About the Role

Prepares, levels, and paints surfaces. Performs various carpentry duties under general supervision.

Responsibilities

• Carpentry: Constructs, alters, and repairs rafters, walls, doors, paneling, windows, furniture, trim, and framing. Refinishes doors, woodwork, and furniture with appropriate stain and varnish.
• Painting: Applies paint using accepted coating methods, including preparation and leveling of surfaces.
• Moving and storage of furniture: Transports furniture and equipment without damage.
• May perform snow removal.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
• Valid Iowa driver’s license.
• At least one year of carpentry and painting experience.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three months of hire.

Working Conditions

• Activities occur both inside and outside, subject to environmental conditions.
• Exposure to extreme temperatures (below 32°F or above 100°F for extended periods).
• Exposure to noise from power tools, fans, compressors, and other loud equipment.
• Exposure to vibration from power tools and large equipment.
• Hazards include working with electrical currents, moving mechanical parts, climbing scaffolding, using chemicals for snow removal, and exposure to atmospheric conditions (e.g., chemicals, wood dust, fumes).

Visual Acuity Requirements

• Work involves taking measurements, assembling parts at close distances, and inspecting work.

Physical Activity Requirements

Constant (67-100% of workday):

• Reaching: Extending hands and arms while using tools.
• Grasping: Applying pressure with fingers and palms to hold tools.
• Repetitive motions: Substantial movements of wrists, hands, and fingers (e.g., sanding, painting).
• Standing: Sustained periods, especially during painting or finishing projects.
• Pushing/Pulling: Using upper extremities to move objects (e.g., sanding, sawing).

Frequent (34-66% of workday):

• Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee (e.g., painting).
• Walking: Moving about to accomplish tasks, carrying tools and equipment.
• Lifting: Raising objects from lower to higher positions or moving them horizontally (e.g., furniture, materials).
• Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc.

Occasional (33% or less of workday):

• Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects (e.g., texture, temperature) by touch.
• Talking: Conveying detailed or important instructions to others.
• Hearing: Discriminating sounds at normal range.

Physical Demand Requirements

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
