About the role
The position involves performing skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level, including tasks such as building, constructing, and repairing various wooden structures and fixtures.
Responsibilities
- Performs rough and finished carpentry
- Modifies, repairs, and maintains buildings and building surfaces
- Inspects, repairs, and/or replaces ceiling tiles
- Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints and drawings
- Schedules and coordinates work
- Lays out scope of work and provides rough estimates
- Operates planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws, routers, and other woodworking machinery
- Assembles, repairs, and/or modifies furniture
- Repairs and sharpens hand and machine tools
- Affords assistance to other structural trades' personnel in the performance of their duties
- Uses computer to access e-mail, receive work instructions, and other administrative information
- Communicates daily using a two-way radio, and/or communication device
- Ensures shop equipment is in proper working condition
- Mixes, matches, and applies stains, dyes, and finishes
- Matches lumber types and grades
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the trade as a journeyman carpenter
- Knowledge of carpentry practices, terminology, and safe handling of tools and equipment
- Ability to operate common woodworking machinery, prepare rough sketches of work, and estimates of materials and labor
- Ability to read blueprints and recognize lumber types and grades
- Ability to keep simple records and basic math skills
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, maintain required records, and read and understand manuals and drawings
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
- Ability to move, lift, and/or carry equipment, parts, and job related materials with or without assistance, exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly
- Ability to accurately discern colors
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license to drive University of Delaware vehicles
