This is the second in a series of three carpenter-related job classifications within the Skilled Trades job family. This classification is distinguished by additional experience and the ability to perform skilled carpentry work. The role may require a flexible work schedule to meet departmental needs.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled carpentry and weatherization functions.
• Assists in conducting final home inspections.
• Provides on-the-job training for crewmembers and volunteers.
• Assigns and reviews work, and trains personnel.
• Estimates materials needed for jobs and coordinates material requirements with purchasing.
• Compiles reports of completed projects.
• Provides instruction on, and monitors safe operations of equipment.
• Refers clients to other agencies for services not covered by the County.
• Monitors materials and tools inventory in the shop and on job sites.
• Maintains vehicles and reports needed repairs to ensure safe and reliable operations.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or G.E.D.
• Four (4) years of general carpentry and weatherization experience, including two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience under the direction of a Carpenter Senior or Housing Services staff performing duties equivalent to craftsman-level work in multiple trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical) and experience in energy conservation techniques.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Skills & Knowledge

Knowledge of:

• Carpentry codes, terminology, practices, and procedures.
• Multiple trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, energy conservation, and subcontracting.
• Standard carpentry maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
• Residential construction and remodeling, including carpentry, heating, A/C and ductwork, basic electrical, and plumbing.
• Federal, State, Local, and County laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, and applicable carpentry standards.
• Management and supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
• Budget preparation and office management.
• Computer equipment, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and software packages.
• Business letter writing, grammar, punctuation, and report preparation.

Skill in:

• Operating and using standard carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tools and equipment.
• Installing and maintaining carpentry work.
• Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
• Applying proper and applicable safety practices, procedures, and regulations.

Work Environment

• Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds regularly, occasional heavy lifting with assistance, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity to operate tools and computers.
• Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, and client/customer contact.
• May involve working in cramped or confined spaces, at heights from ladders and scaffolds, and in all weather conditions (excessive heat and cold).
• Exposure to hazardous waste, foul odors, animal/human fecal matter, insects, rodents, toxic or hazardous chemicals/substances, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and high voltage.
• Requires work both indoors and outdoors.
