This position is accountable for providing carpentry skills at marine project locations. Incumbents construct, erect, install, and repair concrete forms, scaffolds, tunnel supports, frame buildings, and shelters according to sketches, blueprints, or oral instructions. The role involves close collaboration with a Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, Crane Operator, Boat Captain, Laborers, and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons. The incumbent must support Orion’s guiding beliefs and core values centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, with Integrity as the foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Works as assigned by the Project Superintendent or Barge Foreman to ensure successful completion of marine construction projects.
  • Secures and maintains basic carpentry tools, including hammers, nail bags, tape measures, utility knives, chisels, levels, framing squares, screwdrivers, and nail sets.
  • Returns carpentry tools to the Marine Yard or a secured job site location upon project completion.
  • Interprets plans and specifications to build, construct, or repair wooden structures or forms.
  • Receives and offloads building and construction materials safely and proficiently.
  • Lays out foundations, building lines, and anchor bolts.
  • Shoots elevations and grades as required by the project.
  • Erects forms and monitors pours for depressed areas, building lines, and anchor bolts.
  • Performs wood framing and metal stud framing as dictated by the project.
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to wooden structures as required.
  • Picks up needed materials and supplies to complete the project.
  • Collaborates with the Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of co-workers, with authority to stop work if unsafe conditions are observed.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies, reporting any violations promptly.
  • Performs related administrative and technical duties as assigned, including certification and safety training.
  • Maintains confidentiality of Company information, including proprietary and trade secrets.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two (2) years of carpentry experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate proficiency in carpentry.
  • Knowledge of carpentry practices and materials related to concrete forming for reinforced concrete structures.
  • Understanding of marine equipment and devices operation.
  • Awareness of safe work practices in a marine construction environment.
  • General knowledge of concrete forming systems.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Capable of wearing and properly utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes.
  • Ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management.
  • Must remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed.
  • Capable of evacuating work areas quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to walk, step, climb, or move between job site locations, including boarding and disembarking work barges, boats, vessels, or docks of varying heights.
  • Capable of standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods.
  • Performs repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
  • Climbs vertical ladders up to 40'-50' in height.
  • Works in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Lifts and carries objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Adapts to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
