Colby College, a premier liberal arts institution, seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and engaging leader to serve as the Carolyn Muzzy Director of the Colby College Museum of Art. This role will lead the Museum into its next ambitious chapter, leveraging its exceptional collections, acclaimed exhibitions, and expanded facilities to advance teaching, research, and creative practice.

The Carolyn Muzzy Director will be a visionary leader passionate about the role of art in American society, adept at building relationships with students, faculty, administration, artists, community members, trustees, collectors, and donors. The Director will continue to elevate the Museum’s national profile, expand connections with major art museums globally, and foster interdisciplinary inquiry across the College and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Colby College Museum of Art in its mission to transform teaching, research, and creative practice through its collections and exhibitions.
- Build and sustain relationships with a diverse range of constituents, including the Colby College Board of Trustees, Museum Board of Governors, donors, artists, and community members.
- Expand the Museum’s national and global connections with peer institutions, academic art museums, and cultural organizations.
- Advance the Museum’s role as a catalyst for interdisciplinary inquiry and civic engagement.
- Oversee the continued growth and impact of the Lunder Institute for American Art and other strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Passion for the role of art in society and a commitment to the mission of an academic art museum.
- Proven leadership experience in a museum, cultural institution, or comparable setting.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including donors, trustees, artists, and community members.
- Visionary and strategic mindset with a track record of advancing institutional growth and impact.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external audiences.
Pay
Expected starting base salary in the range of $280,000 to $320,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
