About the Role

Build, maintain, repair, and inspect freight cars. Start date is scheduled for October 5, 2026. Paid training will commence in New Smyrna Beach, Florida for two weeks, after which you will return to your home location (Jacksonville) for on-the-job training.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, dismantle, paint, and inspect all freight cars, both wood and steel.
  • Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems.
  • Perform pipe and inspection work in connection with air brake equipment on cars.
  • Inspect, test, and repair air brakes and freight car parts.
  • Operate punches and shears.
  • Paint, surface, letter, cut stencils, and remove paint.
  • Perform car inspections.
  • Perform oxy-acetylene cutting and electric welding.
  • Visually inspect and test machinery and equipment.
  • Listen for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunctions and discuss machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problems or repair machines.
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (A.S.) in applied sciences with emphasis on mechanical applications or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or repairer may be considered in lieu of the A.S. degree at the discretion of the General Mechanical Superintendent.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, including rate, ratio, and percent calculations.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Familiarity with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing English.
  • Qualified welder.
  • Current driver’s license.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and occasionally use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls. The role involves reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Other Requirements

Must possess the following essential tools:

  • Open and box end wrenches (size 3/16" to 1")
  • 1/2" drive socket set with sockets to 1-1/8"
  • Key bar
  • Ball-peen hammer
  • Channel lock pliers
  • Screw drive set (standard and Phillips)

Pay

Initial pay between $27.04/hr - $30.42/hr based on experience. Salary will increase to $33.80/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year).

Schedule

Second Shift: 1500 - 2300. Days off: Thursday/Friday.
