Cargo Installation Lead
About the role
As an active and hands-on member of the cargo team, you will lead installation functions at established work sites. This traveling position requires you to direct the installation of Smiths-related systems and guide the installation team to accomplish MEP/RPM/LEP and/or HE rail installations on time and on budget. You will work closely with the Program Manager and other assigned leaders to ensure all activities, including civil works, stay on schedule. The role involves full responsibility for the installation and integration of Smiths-related systems according to site design documents. You will be expected to be present at the site on a weekly basis, working at least 2 to 3 weeks out of the month to maintain schedules and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on system mechanics, electronics, and safety systems of the product.
- Complete all SDI service safety training and specialized product-specific Service Maintenance training; trained as an alternate Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
- Manage the receipt and inventory of Smiths materials on site, inspect post-shipping, and document any damage for the Program Manager to order replacements.
- Lead the service installation team of FSTs and TSTs, holding daily safety stand-up meetings and huddles to plan the day’s work.
- Coordinate the installation of the equipment package at the site with onsite contractors and assigned cargo team members.
- Coordinate directly with SD/SDI operations/engineering for issues such as server/networking configurations and updates; escalate to the Program Manager as needed.
- Test and commission system equipment according to the approved CBP Site Acceptance Test Plan (SAT), and perform radiation surveys at the site.
- Conduct IQI site testing and SAT tests with CBP test managers; compile the CI list (serial numbers for all equipment delivered to CBP).
- Organize and demobilize all tools and support equipment from the site.
- Ensure successful Service operations by monitoring progress against plans, forecasts, and defined metrics; implement corrective measures as needed (e.g., PM Compliance, Work Order management in ServiceMax).
- Convey the vision, set expectations, and challenge staff to achieve Service’s operations and support goals.
- Develop and maintain a work culture committed to excellent customer service.
- Participate in supplier and customer negotiations to recognize opportunities, ensure cost-efficiency, and maintain alignment with company goals.
- Build and maintain relationships with other functional disciplines within the company.
- Work across functions to ensure business is transacted accurately and within guidelines to the highest ethical standards.
- Comply with and ensure department compliance with company health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Travel regularly, estimated at 60-80%, to meet business objectives.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or country-specific equivalent in engineering or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a technical field or industry.
- Minimum of 5 years of prior experience in the cargo business.
- Strong communication skills and a solid orientation toward customer focus and teamwork.
- Exceptional business and people management skills; ability to teach, train, motivate, and develop staff.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on process improvement.
- Computer literacy, competency in MS Office Suite, and aptitude for learning specialized software programs.
- Decisive, conscientious, and able to interact well in a team environment.
- Ability to lead and maintain the effectiveness of cross-functional teams.
- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and multitasking skills.

- This position may require Sensitive Security Information (SSI) access and vetting via the TSA; must successfully pass a federal background investigation if required.
- May require a U.S. Personal Security Clearance.
- Ability to lift items up to 80 pounds.
