Caregiver or CNA

About the Role

The Caregiver works under the supervision of the Home Services Coordinator and performs tasks that contribute to the client's comfort and safety in the home.

Qualifications

• Demonstrate ability to read, write, and follow a written Plan of Care and document tasks performed.
• Be self-directed and work with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate dependability, tact, patience, and the ability to follow instructions.
• Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience in cleaning, laundry, medication reminders, and escort services.
• 1 year of caregiver experience (CNA preferred).

Responsibilities

• Observation of client functioning and reporting changes to supervisor.
• Functions within the limitations of the individual assignment.
• Attends to the client's requests promptly.
• Assistance with activities of daily living and personal care.
• Provides companionship, socialization, and housekeeping services.
• Assists with medication reminding, including:
  • Inquiries as to whether medications were taken.
  • Verbal prompting to take medications.
  • Handing the appropriately marked medication reminder container to the client.
  • Opening the container if the client is physically unable to do so.
• Assists with meal planning, purchase of food, and food preparation.
• Assists clients to live in a clean and safe environment:
  • Cleans bathrooms and kitchen, including stove and refrigerator.
  • Runs personal errands, per client and Agency request.
  • Performs laundry.
  • Vacuuming and dusting.
  • Changing bed linens.
• Knows and follows infection control policies, including proper hand washing techniques.
• Maintains appropriate communication with supervisory staff and interdisciplinary team members.
• Documents care given and pertinent observations accurately.
• Treats clients and families with respect and maintains confidentiality.
• Accepts and fulfills assignments with the Agency and exercises judgment in accepting assignments.
• Attends required in-service programs per Agency policy.

Limitations

• Shall not act as Power of Attorney.
• Shall not be involved in any financial transactions of the client outside of contracted services (must follow agency policies for securing receipts and obtaining signatures).
• Shall not perform or provide medication setup for a client.
• Shall not provide skilled personal care services (e.g., skilled skin care or dressing needs) unless licensed or certified as a healthcare professional in Illinois.
