About the role

A Career Counselor provides comprehensive case management to assigned individuals, some with multiple barriers to employment, using career assessment, planning, and related tools. This role works collaboratively with Employer Relations staff to arrange interviews, monitor participant performance, and ensure programmatic metrics are met. The position assists training instructors, refers qualified participants to employers, and conducts follow-up.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive case management and career counseling services, including assessments, resumes, and employment preparation.
  • Assist participants in determining appropriate career pathways by analyzing skills, interests, and aptitudes.
  • Research and develop industry knowledge in key occupations to ensure effective matching of candidates to available positions.
  • Counsel participants in career planning and job search strategies while facilitating long-term career goals.
  • Work with Employer Relations staff to support participants with job search efforts.
  • Conduct mock interviews and assist with resumes and cover letters.
  • Develop partnerships with employers, education, and training providers to facilitate program services and positive outcomes.
  • Follow up with participants to assess job-seeking progress, including resume writing and interview preparation.
  • Track and document job interviews and employment status.
  • Ensure accurate, factual, and timely data entry into appropriate databases.
  • Assist at other Career Centers (Bath, Elmira, Montour Falls, Hornell) for coverage or training.
  • Collaborate with the System Manager and CSS Workforce Development Board to attract diverse and inclusive customers.
  • Assist in developing and facilitating customer workshops, career center orientations, and virtual/in-person career services.
  • Support CSS Workforce NY with processing training under WIOA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Services, Education, Business Management, or related field; or three years of related experience/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Innovative, enthusiastic, with a problem-solving aptitude.
  • Experience in training, counseling, and/or case management.
  • Ability to work with and support a diverse customer base.
  • Commitment to assisting low-income and disadvantaged individuals in overcoming barriers to success.
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to master data and case management systems.
  • Ability to use various virtual platforms.
  • Multilingual preferred.
  • Training in Professional Accredited Resume Writer (PARW) is a plus.

Pay

$35,000–$39,000 yearly.
