Career Coach (Evergreen)

About the Role

The Career Coach provides individualized and group career coaching to undergraduate and graduate students, supporting career exploration, professional development, internship attainment, graduate & professional school applications, and post-graduation employment. This position aligns coaching strategies with university retention and student success goals, fostering trusting relationships with students, employers, departments, staff, and faculty to advance students’ transitions to competitive employment or further education. This Evergreen position will be used to hire multiple candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Career Development:
    • Conduct interviews with applicants to discuss career planning, employment opportunities, interests, and procedures.
    • Identify, ensure completion of, and interpret career assessment tools to help students make informed career decisions.
    • Provide career and employment advising to students and alumni.
    • Assist students in building a Career Development Portfolio and guide them in creating a Career Development Plan, including a Post-Graduate Succession Plan.
    • Deliver career coaching and enrichment to ensure accurate interpretation and application of career assessment tools.
    • Offer individualized support for securing and maintaining internships, mentors, and employment, including job coaching during the first month of a new job.
    • Refer students requiring advanced career assessments or those with disabilities/other restrictions to appropriate resources.
    • Conduct career planning and employability classes, workshops, and seminars; participate in their planning and development.
    • Assist students with market research and employment forecasts for their chosen careers.
  • Coordination:
    • Collaborate with the Internship Coordinator to connect students to experiential learning opportunities such as Co-Op, internships, job shadowing, and externships.
    • Contribute to coordinating career and employment events, programs, and community affairs.
    • Assist in overseeing the college’s online career and employment center.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Research and develop collaborations with employers and industries related to PVAMU’s Programs of Study.
    • Collaborate with Financial Counselors and Academic Advisors to align career plans with academic goals.
    • Orient users on the purposes and goals of college placement services.
    • Prepare announcements, advertising copy, and correspondence for recruitment purposes.
    • Partner with faculty to host employer and career-related in-class events.
    • Work with the PVAMU Communication and Alumni Services Team to disseminate notices of workshops, job fairs, job openings, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities.
  • Reporting:
    • Track and maintain files and reports on employment, knowledge rates, and departmental achievements using online career or student success platforms.
    • Prepare reports for local, state, and federal offices regarding statistical data on employment categories.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in annual professional development training as required.
    • May supervise student workers and interns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in social science, psychology, social work/sociology, education, human resources, communication, public relations, marketing, business, healthcare, or a related field.
    • Two years of related experience in workforce development, career services, human resources, college relations, marketing, job placement services, or higher education.
    • An additional one year of case management experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
    • Knowledge of career coaching, advisement, and career assessment software.
    • Familiarity with career and student development theories.
    • Knowledge of job market trends and career planning practices.
    • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
    • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and presentation skills.
    • Knowledge of computer applications, search engines, and web navigation.
    • Knowledge of job-seeking techniques and employment readiness processes.
    • Understanding of human behavior, individual differences, motivation, and attitudes.
    • Knowledge of various types, characteristics, and uses of resumes.
    • Proficiency in using technology to deliver career services, with emphasis on employment search and online application processes.
    • Ability to work with a broad customer base.
    • Ability to develop, deliver, and market workshops and job resources.
    • Ability to research and quickly develop knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and occupational information sources.
  • Other Requirements:
    • May be required to lift at least 35 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Three years of case management experience in addition to the required experience.
  • Licensing in Counseling, Career Development, or Career Coaching.
