Cardiology Veterinary Nurse I

About the role

Provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position will primarily be working in the Cardiology unit of the Small Animal Clinic; instructs and demonstrates techniques to students; assists students, veterinary nurse and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment and cleanliness of hospital areas.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care for ill and injured animals
• Work primarily in the Cardiology unit of the Small Animal Clinic
• Instruct and demonstrate techniques to students
• Assist students, veterinary nurses, and veterinarians in their work
• Maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas
• Lift medical equipment and animals into cages
• Carry animals between cages and exam tables/gurneys
• Push carts containing animals and equipment to other areas of the hospital
• Climb stairs carrying lab samples
• Restrain animals
• Lift up to 50 lbs individually and up to 150 lbs as a team
• Work with animals or unfixed tissue
• May wear a respirator
• Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases

Requirements

• Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology
• Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization
• Experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment

Qualifications

• Six months to one year of experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting
• Experience in cardiology procedures is preferred
