About the Role

Obtains diagnostic transthoracic and fetal echocardiograms and compiles preliminary reports on all exams requested by the pediatric cardiologist. Participates in a rotating call schedule covering nights, weekends, and occasional holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Performs transthoracic and fetal echocardiograms according to Nationwide Children’s Echo Lab protocols.
  • Maintains a high level of understanding of congenital heart disease, cath lab interventions, surgical repairs, and complications to acquire high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Generates complete preliminary reports in the reporting system.
  • Performs echocardiograms at various offsite clinics and local hospitals; coordinates transportation, start times, coverage, and emergencies with the team.
  • Provides comprehensive training and mentorship to cardiology fellows, residents, students, and new or junior-level sonographers.
  • Participates and/or leads department quality and process initiatives.
  • Assists Technical and Medical Directors in evaluating new equipment and sonographers.
  • Participates in research projects as requested.
  • Attends and participates in Echo conferences, staff meetings, and Echo Quality Improvement meetings.
  • Maintains required CMEs for pediatric and fetal echocardiography registration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applied science and graduation from an accredited medical ultrasound school preferred.
  • Active registration in Pediatric Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • Valid Ohio Operator’s License with no more than one violation and/or at-fault accident in the previous two years; no more than two violations or at-fault accidents in the previous three years.
  • Proof of auto insurance, validated annually.
  • Maintains certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Five years of full-time experience in pediatric echocardiography.
  • One year of experience in fetal echocardiography.
  • Extensive knowledge of normal and abnormal pediatric and fetal cardiac imaging.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally: Bend/twist, exposure to blood/bodily fluids, chemicals/medications, climb stairs/ladder, cold/hot temperatures, communicable diseases/pathogens, flexing/extending neck, fumes/gases/vapors, lifting/carrying 0–60 lbs, loud noises, reaching above shoulder, squat/kneel, working outdoors.
  • Frequently: Computer skills, driving motor vehicles (work required), patient equipment, pushing/pulling 0–100+ lbs (with assistance), sitting, standing, walking.
  • Continuously: Audible speech, color vision, decision-making, depth perception, hand use (grasping, gripping, turning), hearing acuity, interpreting data, machinery, peripheral vision, problem-solving, repetitive hand/arm use, seeing (far/near).

Additional physical requirements may include exposure to radiation/fluoroscopy.
