This position prepares patients and assists in performing diagnostic and specific therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures under the direct supervision of critical care RNs, RTRs, and cardiologists. Provides safe, quality patient care based on defined standards for adult and geriatric populations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure top-quality diagnostic images with minimal radiation exposure for patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Submit monthly dosimetry badges for radiation exposure reporting, checking, and posting by the Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Assist in fluoroscoping all lead aprons and thyroid shields annually to verify integrity.
  • Provide high-quality diagnostic images for physician review.
  • Conduct pre-procedure teaching for patients and their families before and during procedures.
  • Prepare patients for pre- and post-catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
  • Obtain vital signs, assess heart rhythm, pedal/brachial pulses, attach patients to the EKG monitor, and level transducers with accurate documentation on the patient chart.
  • Shave and prepare the appropriate entry site according to departmental procedures.
  • Apply dressings to puncture sites, monitor for bleeding or hematoma during healing, and instruct patients on post-procedural care.
  • Utilize sterile technique in preparing and maintaining delicate instrumentation for catheterization procedures.
  • Scrub and assist cardiologists in performing procedures as requested.
  • Operate the physiologic monitoring system, balancing and calibrating each channel for procedures performed in the laboratory.
  • Assist in Code 300s and patient resuscitation as needed.
  • Prepare the procedure room to ensure smooth workflow and minimize complaints.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to operate all cardiovascular/electrophysiology laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure procedure consents are properly completed and signed.
  • Complete protocol sheets during procedures, noting each step and time.
  • Document patient case information in the system and ensure proper charge capture.
  • Clean the catheterization area and table between cases.
  • Replenish supplies in each laboratory as needed.
  • Transport patients to and from the cardiovascular laboratory.
  • Participate in the mandatory call schedule and complete scheduled cases before the end of the workday as required by the supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and legible documentation of procedure information.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
  • Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Cardiovascular Technology Program (required).
  • RCIS certification or acquired within 18 months of employment (required).
  • 6 months of work experience in a Cardiac Cath lab (preferred).
  • BLS certification (required).
  • ACLS certification or acquired within 90 days (preferred).

Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all cardiovascular/electrophysiology laboratory procedures.
  • Complete understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system.
  • Ability to operate all cardiovascular/electrophysiology laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care.
  • Effective communication in both verbal and written formats.
  • Critical thinking for complex patient situations, process improvements, and evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to assist others in developing clinical reasoning skills.
