About the role
This job posting is being used to fill a permanent, full-time Captain, Adult Institution position at Valley State Prison. Captains can be assigned to various program areas including Complex I, Complex II, Central Services, and Health Care Access Unit.
Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise inmate populations in assigned program areas.
- Implement and enforce departmental rules and regulations.
- Conduct disciplinary actions as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
- Train and mentor institutional staff.
- Evaluate staff performance and implement corrective measures.
Requirements
- Successfully completed the Captain, Adult Institution examination.
- Current state employee with lateral transfer eligibility or reinstatement eligibility.
- Eligible for a Training and Development assignment.
- Possess advanced knowledge of custody operations, discipline, departmental rules, and classification of incarcerated persons.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work cooperatively with department staff, other agencies, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of EEO policies and procedures and staff hiring.
- Extensive computer application usage, records retention, and statistical reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, corrections, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in corrections or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise large inmate populations.
- Proven success in implementing and enforcing departmental rules and regulations.
- Experience in training and mentoring institutional staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, and leadership abilities.

Pay
$12,539.00 - $14,350.00 per month
Schedule
Full-time position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
