Captain (#010910) Turbeville Correctional Inst, Turbeville (CLARENDON) Level 2

Responsibilities

• Schedule, direct, and manage the employment and duty activities of security shift personnel engaged in security operations of a level two facility.
• Supervise, inspect, and ensure proper perimeter and internal security and control measures are in effect and enforced.
• Prepare, submit, and monitor reports required by the chain of command and policy.
• Direct and redirect security resources for optimum security and safety.
• Ensure institutional buildings and state property are properly secured.
• Train, develop, instruct, evaluate, and counsel subordinates to ensure duty performance aligns with state laws and agency policies.
• Ensure proper control, issue, and use of weapons, keys, security devices, and agency equipment.
• Inspect all posts where shift employees are deployed.
• Interview and counsel inmates as necessary to ensure maximum safety and security.
• Serve as the on-call official.
• Successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 years).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.
