Capitol Security Guard
About the role
As a Security Officer, you will play a vital role in protecting the Nebraska State Capitol and surrounding state facilities while providing a welcoming and professional presence for employees, visitors, and the public. This position offers the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of individuals while responding to a variety of situations that require sound judgment, compassion, and problem-solving skills.
Security Officers help ensure a safe environment by responding to medical emergencies, supporting public meetings and events, assisting employees and visitors, and addressing security concerns as they arise. During after-hours operations, Officers maintain building security through foot and vehicle patrols, monitor security systems and cameras, and remain alert to potential safety concerns. Officers also document daily activities through detailed reports and logs to support effective communication and continued safety efforts.

Responsibilities
- Provide security for the State Capitol Building and other state buildings in the Lincoln area.
- Work independently to provide security for state property, respond to emergencies and alarms, and provide assistance to state employees and the public.
- Perform vehicle and foot patrols of interior and exterior of buildings, fire monitoring, use an electronic guard tour system, access control, and enforcement of building and parking rules/regulations.
- Operate audio/visual monitoring devices, monitor computer security system, and control after-hours building access by employees and visitors.
- Maintain a summary record of all shift activities, complaints, and report to supervisor.
- Learn and maintain information about locations to assist visitors.
Requirements
- No specific education, training, or experience is required for entry to this class.
- Preferred: One year of security experience and Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Requires certification in first aid and CPR or must obtain within first six months of employment.
- Valid driver’s license and completion of an approved defensive driving class necessary for the use of state vehicles.
- Must be able to walk approximately five (5) miles during each shift and have the ability to climb stairs.
- Must be able to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Regular and reliable attendance is expected.
- Must successfully complete an extensive background screening, including a fingerprint-based criminal history check and Personal History Questionnaire.
- Applicants must be free of felony convictions and cannot maintain continuous association or dealings with persons, groups, or organizations known or reasonably suspected of involvement in criminal activity.

- Follow instructions and remain calm during emergency or adverse situations.
- Handle difficult or irate individuals and maintain harmonious relationships.
- Read and understand labels, signs, guidelines, and instructions.
- Pay attention to remember and record details of incidents, people, places, and things.
- Learn State and employing agency safety/security policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Operate equipment and vehicles used to perform assigned duties.
- Write accurate and detailed (computer-generated) incident reports.
- Follow instructions and work from guidelines without close supervision.
- Demonstrate good judgment, sound decision-making skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Be a self-starter with good interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people.
Pay
$18.210 per hour.
