Canyon Maintenance (35523)

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is a federally recognized Indian Tribe located in Palm Springs, California, with 32,000 acres of reservation lands spanning Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, and the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. The Tribe owns and operates two 18-hole championship golf courses, three casinos, two world-class spas, and a fuel station.

About the role

This is a full-time position scheduled five days per week, including weekends, for eight to ten hours per day. The primary mission is to maintain, protect, and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the canyons and other Tribal properties.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Indian and Tahquitz Canyons, the Trail Building, Tribal Cemetery, and other Tribal properties as required.
• Ensure the safety of workers, hikers, and guests in the canyons.
• Abide by and enforce regulations/ordinances in the Canyons as set forth by the Tribal Council.
• Assist in search and rescue operations as necessary.
• Support local police, fire department, search and rescue units, and emergency medical agencies as directed, as well as Tribal organizations to maintain Tribal land.
• Maintain trails, signage, picnic areas, parking areas, and roads in the canyons.
• Maintain Canyon uniforms, vehicles, and equipment in serviceable condition.
• Perform daily clean-up of the canyon and other Tribal properties.
• Adhere to general policies and procedures in force for all Tribal employees.
• Perform other tasks as directed.

Requirements

• Minimum of a High School Diploma.
• Experience working with small motors, hand tools, chainsaws, and other maintenance equipment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to read topographic maps and aerial photos.
• Proficiency in using GPS.
• Certification in CPR and Basic First Aid.
• Must be physically fit and pass a physical examination within 30 days of employment.
• Must be able to hike three miles with a 25-pound pack in 45 minutes or less.
• Must maintain a Class B driver’s license.
• Must be a skilled hiker in desert and mountainous terrain.
• Must be skilled in land navigation using map and compass.
• Knowledgeable in search and rescue operations.

Working Conditions

• Must be able to hike all trails in Tahquitz and Indian Canyons in all weather conditions while carrying a backpack with needed supplies.
• Must be able to perform maintenance tasks during the off-season (summer months), including fuels suppression, trail maintenance, and trash clean-up.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. to waist level and walk while carrying the weight; may need to move rocks, hay, trees, and equipment.
• Must be able to work outdoors daily in extreme weather conditions ranging from 32°F to 125°F for extended periods.

Schedule
