Position Duties
- Transports inmates to and from the Brevard County Jail complex.
- Receives work assignments; prepares crew assignment sheets and assigns work.
- Instructs inmates on training dogs to obey basic commands, socialization, and specialized tasks for service dogs.
- Supervises and controls inmate workers; monitors for difficulties and intervenes if necessary.
- Cleans and disinfects cages, pens and yards.
- Maintains security at all times; assures inmates are following rules and procedures; assures all inmates are accounted for and contained in appropriate area.
- Operates equipment such as power sprayer.
- Presents forms, logs, and reports documenting crew activities.
- Attends meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training.
- Depending on staffing, may be required to supervise inmates working in the kitten nursery.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires high school diploma or GED.
- Requires a Florida Driver's License (must maintain for duration of employment).
- Requires animal care or animal handling experience.
- Requires a minimum of six (6) months of supervisor experience.
- Requires successful completion of the Sheriff's office pre-employment medical certification.
Additional Information
- Work schedule is 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Tuesday - Saturday OR Sunday - Thursday, including holidays.
- Flexibility is required in work schedule to accommodate operational needs to include evenings, and working varying shifts any day of the week.
- In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster that may threaten the area the employee will be expected to work.
- Must have the ability to work outdoors in extreme heat.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks, and pre-employment medical physical.
- submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
