The Corporate Functions Governance & Control (CFG&C) team within ESS drives risk governance and control management for several business units, including ESS; Corporate Affairs & Communications; Colleague Experience Group; General Counsel’s Organization; Enterprise Strategy; and American Express National Bank Headquarters (Corporate Functions). CFG&C enables risk governance and control management through a structure that governs, identifies, assesses, manages, and reports on enterprise, operational, and compliance risks.
CFG&C is seeking a Summer Intern to support a Regulatory Governance project focused on strengthening the Reliance Model across Corporate Functions. The intern will assess current processes, identify improvement opportunities, and help develop recommendations to enhance consistency and governance. This role offers exposure to regulatory risk management, stakeholder engagement, and reporting.
Responsibilities
How will you make an impact in this role?
- Review existing Reliance Model to understand current requirements and workflows.
- Conduct stakeholder interviews and working sessions to document Corporate Functions sentiments around execution and governance of the process.
- Map the current-state process and identify recurring pain points, gaps, dependencies, and opportunities to improve consistency and usability.
- Develop reusable guidance, FAQs, templates, and communications to support business-unit execution.
- Deliver executive-ready recommendations, including a proposed future-state process and practical implementation roadmap.
Expected Deliverables
- Current-state process map and summary of key findings.
- Draft Reliance Model toolkit containing guidance, templates, FAQs, and standard communications.
- Final presentation outlining recommendations, anticipated benefits, and next steps.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s degree program.
- Bachelor’s degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
- Demonstrated interest in regulatory compliance, governance, operational risk, process improvement, or financial services.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to organize information, identify themes, and translate findings into practical recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clear PowerPoint presentations and written materials.
- Detail-oriented, curious, collaborative, and able to manage project milestones with guidance in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in financial services or regulatory governance is helpful but not required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; experience with process mapping or data visualization is a plus.
Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
