Campus Security Officer - Part Time

About the role
The Campus Security Officer is responsible for protecting the personnel and property of Covenant College. Officers maintain the security and integrity of the campus by patrolling and monitoring activities, detecting suspicious behavior, and ensuring safety. This role assists in managing campus security and safety programs, including fire safety, emergency management, parking, and key control, and supervises assigned work-study students.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a strong visual presence on campus.
- Protect personnel and property by patrolling the campus and monitoring video surveillance.
- Monitor entrances to the campus and maintain security of doors to guard against theft.
- Respond to alarms and calls for aid or distress; clear alarms as appropriate.
- Provide First Aid as appropriate.
- Report rule infractions and violations.
- Monitor and assist in the maintenance of security cameras and the fire alarm system.
- Respond to campus emergencies following appropriate protocols, with emphasis on individuals within the campus community.
- Investigate and report on suspicious activities, accidents, and safety concerns.
- Supervise student workers.
- Issue tickets and citations.
- Monitor parking areas and special events on campus.
- Call for aid when necessary and use radios/cellular telephones to maintain contact with other security personnel.
- Respond to calls for assistance related to Maintenance and Operations issues and after-hours emergencies.
- Maintain Campus Security Vehicles.
- Shuttle students to and from student apartments or remote parking areas when needed.
- Assist with the management and issuance of keys.
- Monitor the status of door and key card access systems.
- If assigned, carry an assigned firearm on duty in accordance with the College's firearm policy and established protocols.
- Assist in the maintenance of the Daily Crime Log.
- Perform other duties and/or department projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience within a security, public safety, or law enforcement organization.
- Passion for the college environment with an ability to build strong rapport with students, faculty, and staff.
- High level of professional ethics, personal integrity, and energy for the work.
- Leadership and organizational skills; initiative; ability to prioritize and act as a proactive problem-solver.
- Good judgment and ability to deal with confidential matters.
- Able to relate to others in a cooperative and mature Christian manner with satisfactory oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong self-awareness of biases.
- Neat appearance and professionalism in representing the college.
- In-depth understanding of applicable laws, risk management, security procedures, policy, and protocol to inform immediate and correct responses to emergencies.
- An acceptance of and commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
- Understanding of the mission and purpose of Covenant College; must be able to assent to Covenant College's Staff Commitments.
Preferences
- Bachelor's or Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience working in higher education security/public safety.
Schedule
The responsibilities of the position require evening, weekend, and holiday work schedules and commitments. Days and hours of work may be irregular.
Physical Work Environment
This role operates primarily on campus grounds, in facilities, and at events, occasionally in a professional office environment. The position may be physically demanding, requiring standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, and reaching. It may involve operating campus security vehicles and working in adverse weather conditions. Classified as medium work, with occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. Requires fluency in English for expressing or exchanging ideas and conversation.
