About the role
The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for providing campus safety services to the university community, including enforcing university regulations, vehicle and traffic laws, local, state, and federal laws. This position also involves providing emergency response on campus and protecting life and property within the Clarkson community. Additionally, the Campus Safety Officer engages in outreach and communication efforts to women and/or underrepresented student groups on campus around issues of alcohol consumption, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and bias-related conduct.
Responsibilities
- Participate in a variety of safety and security activities on the Clarkson University campuses
- Conduct foot and vehicular patrols of the campuses, secure buildings, respond to emergencies, assist in traffic control and parking enforcement, confront violations of University Regulations, assist external law enforcement and/or public service agencies as required in campus related incidents
- Prepare written investigative reports of all incidents on campus
- Conduct foot, bicycle and vehicular security patrol
- Act as the primary Campus Safety & Security telephone contact via the cell phone as needed and instructed
- Maintain communication channels, utilizing scanners, two-way radio, etc.
- Provide security service as required to all members of the University community
- Provide security and traffic control for special events assigned
- Maintain current training and certifications in all aspects of security and safety relating to the campus community and as required by law
- Respond to all building alarms
- Report all fires to the local fire department and fire/smoke alarms to the Physical Plant; be familiar with locations of all pull stations and fire extinguishers
- Report all system malfunctions to appropriate on-call personnel
- Assist in the maintenance of the Access Control System
- Conduct building fire drills as required by law
- Report building emergencies to appropriate personnel and submit written reports of response
- File Defect Sheets on any hazardous defects or system malfunctions
- Confront any person violating, or suspected of violating University regulations
- Request appropriate law enforcement intervention/support as necessary
- Report all incidents or offenses to University authorities and advise external law enforcement agencies as required
- Complete official reports on all incidents and offenses in a timely manner
- Afford assistance in promoting crime prevention and security and safety awareness for the University community
- Serve as a liaison with HRs/RAs in promoting residence hall safety and security
- Administer CPR, AED and First Aid as required
- Provide medical transport assistance upon request
- Afford assistance in campus parking management, enforce parking regulations, issue tickets to illegally parked vehicles on campus and enter written tickets into motor vehicle system
- Report road conditions in inclement weather for snow removal
- Afford assistance in keeping parking lots clear of parked vehicles for snow removal
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Office of Campus Safety & Security
Qualifications
- High School Diploma required
- Willingness to get certified by the State of New York as a Security Guard (8 Hour Pre- Assignment Course for Security Guards) within 30 days of hire
- Certified in CPR, AED and First Aid
- New York State driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the University
- Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred
- Police and/or Security Officer Experience preferred
- Law enforcement experience is helpful
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility and customer service oriented
- Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Capacity to work independently
- Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel
- Communicate effectively, at times under stressful circumstances
- Understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures
- Complete routine paperwork
