Campus Safety & Security Officer

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols of campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds to monitor for safety hazards, security breaches, and suspicious activity.
  • Enforce university policies, including but not limited to, building access, parking regulations, and general safety standards to maintain order and prevent disturbances.
  • Respond to campus emergencies, disturbances, or incidents, providing immediate assistance and ensuring proper reporting and follow-up procedures.
  • Assist in monitoring security systems such as video surveillance, alarm systems, and access control to identify and address potential security risks.
  • Provide assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors with directions, information, or support as needed, contributing to a positive campus environment.
  • Document and report security-related incidents or safety concerns to the appropriate authorities, including the campus safety team, law enforcement, or university administration.
  • Provide support in emergency situations, including evacuations, medical emergencies, or natural disasters, and assist emergency responders when necessary.
  • Maintain a positive and approachable demeanor, engaging with the campus community to build trust and rapport while ensuring adherence to campus rules.
  • Complete and maintain accurate reports of daily activities, incidents, and security-related events to ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
  • Assist in the upkeep and readiness of security equipment, such as radios, flashlights, and other devices used for patrolling and monitoring campus activities.

Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A-Unarmed Security Officer License or Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or related fields is preferred but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in a university or campus setting is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, and law enforcement, both verbally and in writing.
  • Friendly, approachable, and professional attitude with the ability to assist and interact with a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to assess situations quickly and respond appropriately, especially in emergency or high-pressure scenarios.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail to identify safety hazards, suspicious behavior, or security concerns.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and patrol for extended periods of time, including in various weather conditions.
  • Understanding campus rules, regulations, and emergency procedures, and the ability to enforce them effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay calm and composed when responding to emergencies or confrontational situations.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license, with the ability to operate a vehicle if needed for patrol duties.
  • Multilingual skills highly preferred.
  • Ability to contribute to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice through their work.
