About the role

The Central Virginia Community College, Office of Public Safety and Police supports the educational mission of the college by administering security, and safety programs that comply with state and federal mandates and that provide resources to create a safer learning community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide public safety services and perform duties with efficiency, professionalism and integrity.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment conducive to enhancing the learning experience.
  • Protect the college equipment, facilities and supplies from damage, theft or other negative situations.
  • Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the rules and regulations of CVCC and the VCCS.
  • Educate the community on matters related to emergency preparedness and personal safety and security.
  • Patrol assigned area in vehicle and on foot; perform active campus community problem identification; attend campus related meetings; maintain high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention; actively perform routine patrol, concentrating on high incident areas, to detect possible criminal activities or needs for service; regularly check college property, facilities and surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of the campus; monitor radio broadcasts and other officer(s) to ensure awareness of activities in area and to provide assistance, if needed; identify, report, and respond to suspicious activities or needs for service.

Requirements

  • Classes in police science or a combination of education, training, or related criminal justice certificate program.
  • Current law enforcement officer certification or ability to obtain from department of Criminal Justice Services.
  • No criminal record; a background investigation will be completed.
  • Certified or able to obtain DCJS certificate as a police officer in the State of Virginia.
  • Able to certify as a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator.
  • Ability to qualify for certification in use of a firearm and all approved and issued police equipment.
  • Possess a working knowledge of law enforcement, emergency and safety related procedures and be familiar with state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CVCC organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete designated ICS/NIMS trainings.
  • Physically fit and able to meet the requirements and training standards of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as they pertain to law enforcement officers in the State of Virginia.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion in the use of authority, to write reports, and general correspondence, to effectively present safety related information and respond to questions.
  • Proven ability to act/react calmly and appropriately in emergency situations, to collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with academic departments and staff, support departments and staff, students, and community organizations.
  • Ability to apply appropriate customer service techniques, use sound judgment to resolve issues, and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work varied hours, works on various campuses, and be available for emergency recall.
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work varied rotating shifts and for extended periods while carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols and operate college-motorized vehicles.

Qualifications

  • Education in criminal justice or related programs.

Skills

  • Ability to operate a State Vehicle.

$53,000 to $60,000 annually.

Schedule

Typically, Monday through Friday, schedule may vary based on college activities and scheduling.
