About the Role

The Stevens Campus Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of all University properties, faculty, staff, students, guests, and visitors during the assigned tour of duty. The officer will patrol University buildings, grounds, and adjacent public areas to enforce New Jersey state statutes and Stevens Institute of Technology rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prevent and suppress crime, protect life and property, and apprehend offenders.
  • Preserve peace, maintain order, and enforce state statutes and University regulations.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds, with special attention to high-crime areas.
  • Conduct criminal investigations, prepare reports, make arrests, and process individuals.
  • Testify in court or at University hearings.
  • Notify superiors of major crimes and notable incidents.
  • Provide directions and general information to guests and visitors.
  • Respond to emergency calls such as fires and personal injuries.
  • Assist in training new officers and maintain assigned equipment, including firearms and clothing.
  • Perform duties to protect the lives, safety, and property of students, staff, faculty, and guests.
  • Participate in public safety events and conduct training seminars for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Attend departmental in-service training and seminars as required by the Chief of Police.
  • Be available for additional work details or recall during emergent events affecting community safety.
  • Assist in developing and improving community relations mechanisms.

Authority and Powers

Campus police officers possess all powers and authority outlined in N.J.S.A. 18A:6-4.2, N.J.S.A. 18A:6-4.5, and N.J.S.A. 18A:6-4.7.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be a United States citizen and a legal resident of New Jersey.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED; higher education in a related field preferred.
  • Must be fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Must possess a New Jersey driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must have successfully completed a New Jersey Basic Police Academy and be a fully certified police officer or Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO II) as required by the New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC).
  • Must possess current PTC certification or equivalent.
  • Retired police officers must not have a break in service for 3 years or more.
  • Must successfully pass an interview, background investigation, psychological examination, and drug screening.
  • Must qualify with handgun and long gun as prescribed by the NJ Police Training Commission.
  • Must be computer literate and able to operate software programs associated with campus police duties.

Physical Demands

The role requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, talking, listening, writing, and reading. Occasionally, the officer may need to run, restrain individuals, or be exposed to physical conflict.

Pay

The annual base salary range for this position is $52,500.00 - $60,500.00. Compensation is determined based on experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations.
