About the role
The Campus Police Officer shall be responsible for the safety and security of all University properties; the faculty, staff, student body; and guests and visitors during the assigned tour of duty. The Campus Police Officer will patrol the University buildings, grounds and adjacent public areas to enforce the statutes of the State of Rhode Island, and the rules and regulations of Brown University.
Responsibilities

- Protection of life and property.
- Apprehension and protection of offenders.
- Preservation of the peace and maintenance of order.
- Enforcement of all state statutes and University regulations.
- Aid in the development and improvement of mechanisms to create and enhance relationships with the department and the community.
Requirements
- Must pass or be a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, Rhode Island State Police Academy, Providence Police Academy, or Warwick Police Academy.
- Must be eligible for licensing as a Special Police Office by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police.
- Those candidates who are required to attend the RI Municipal Police Training Academy must pass all recruitment training courses, including Emergency Water Safety.
- Pass psychological and physical exam.
- Be 21 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Be a US citizen.
- Have high school diploma or GED, higher education a plus.
- Have no felony convictions.
Qualifications
- Ability to effect an arrest using handcuffs and other restraints.
- Subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
- Operate and utilize various types of law enforcement equipment.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms approved for use by the department’s firearms officer, and other department-authorized weapons.
- Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree.
- Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
- Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include arranging for emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.
- Extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.
- Process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
- Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
- Communicate effectively with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
Skills
- High level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including the handling and use of firearms.
- Capable of using deadly force when appropriate based on the laws of the State of Rhode Island and Department policy.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
