Campground Host

The primary objective of the Campground Host is to ensure a quality recreational experience for visitors within the Donald MacDonald Campground. The Campground Host will answer camper questions, assist with park maintenance and are available for after-hour emergencies.

This position requires the following skills and abilities:

  • Enjoy volunteering in an environment with extensive public contact
  • Able to do tasks with minimal supervision
  • Able to learn quickly and follow instructions accurately
  • Able to perform basic record keeping
  • Able to perform manual labor tasks
  • Able to clean and sanitize facilities with a variety of cleaning agents and chemicals

The Indian River County Campground Host Program is intended to improve services by providing an immediate contact person for emergency medical situations, breakdown of utility services and camper problems and situations. They also assist the camper with information about the park, its facilities and other local interests.

Essential Job Duties

  • Possess good communications skills
  • Demonstrate courteousness
  • Display a helpful attitude to all visitors, even under stressful situations
  • Provide volunteer services under the direction of a designated Parks Foreman and/or the Parks Venue and Special Events Manager
  • Aid County Staff in the maintenance of facilities, trails and grounds
  • Assist County Staff with cleaning, sanitizing and stocking of restrooms, emptying trash containers and replacing the liners, cleaning roadways and trails, cleaning campsites, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and disposing of ashes
  • Assist County Staff with raking and grooming of sites and public areas, maintaining a litter-free facility, picking up cigarette butts, maintaining outlying areas such as trails, outposts, and rental cabins
  • Maintain a good relationship with County employees, and the visiting public
  • A Campground Host must be familiar with local points of interest, nearby facilities, and local rules and regulations
  • Report problems and any unsafe or hazardous conditions as they are discovered
  • Be available as the point of contact for campers and guests during hours if County Staff are not present

Typical Requirements

  • Familiarity with all Indian River County Campground policies and guidelines
  • Indian River County will be provided a campsite that will be equipped with water, sewer and electric
  • Expected to be available during weekends, holidays, and after-hours periods
  • Parks Division will provide weekly schedules

Supplemental Information

  • BACKGROUND CHECK: As a campground host, you will be fulfilling a job of public trust on County property and providing services to visitors of all ages, including children and senior citizens, who can be quite vulnerable. As a result, your offer to be a Volunteer Host Camper will be contingent on completing a background and DMV check. After your offer, you will receive an email describing the process and helping you to get started. Your volunteer position offer cannot proceed without completing this check, and your offer may be rescinded in certain circumstances, e.g. You must have a clean DMV record. We cannot offer employment to registered sex offenders or persons with arrests/convictions for any type of violent crime.
  • This is a volunteer position. I understand that as a volunteer I am not entitled to any County group insurance benefits, vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, or retirement benefits.
