About the role
This seasonal position supports the Camp Director in all facets of Day Camp operation including staff scheduling, training and supervision. They will also act as person “in charge” in absence of Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with camp leadership for scheduling, training, supervising and evaluating performance of day camp staff.
- Affords assistance with the oversight and implementation of day camp curriculum with emphasis of theme week/days and fun activities for campers.
- Affords assistance with the planning, scheduling, and supervision of Family Fun Events for camp.
- Affords assistance with scheduled camp staff meetings.
- Coordinates, develops, and implements plans for themes, lessons, and age-appropriate activities for camp that reflect the philosophy of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.
- Provides direction and communication feedback to counselors regarding related issues as well as administrative issues and decisions.
- Develops and maintains good working relationships with the directors, staff, caregivers and families by way of open communication, positive problem solving, flexibility, and teamwork.
- Maintains YMCA requirements/ratios and ensures all staff members do the same.
- Serves as incident commander for unit-level emergencies and coordinates with camp leadership on broader emergency response.
- Documents and reports all incidents, accidents, and behavioral concerns following established protocols.
- Maintains the health and wellness of campers and staff, coordinating with Camp leadership as needed.
- Ensures comprehensive compliance with all YMCA policies, Praesidium standards, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and state licensing requirements.
- Conducts hourly ratio checks and maintains required camper to staff ratios and ensures staff certification compliance.
- Participates in strategic planning, pre-season preparation, and post-season evaluation processes.
- Assumes acting camp leadership responsibilities when Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director are unavailable.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age (required)
- Associates degree in Education, Recreation, Youth Development, or related field preferred; OR 2-5 years progressive YMCA camp experience
- Minimum 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience in youth programs
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record preferred
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
- Basic computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office products with ability to use technology for programmatic needs
- Knowledge of database software preferred
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Good judgment and ability to problem solve
- Attend all required pre-camp and camp season trainings and meetings as scheduled
- Knowledge of American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards preferred
- Completion of all required pre-camp training, certifications, and background clearances by first day of camp
