About
Mizna is accepting submissions for its newest issue, focusing on poetry, prose, and hybrid literary work centered around ancestry and indigeneity. Edited by Umniya Najaer, a poet and scholar of Sudanese origin, this issue explores how ancestral knowledge is lived and transformed across Southwest Asia and North Africa.
Theme
This issue invites work that views ancestry and indigeneity as living practices rather than static legacies. It seeks to honor Indigenous wisdoms and give space for writers and artists to explore their relationships to land, memory, and belonging. The theme also considers how contemporary struggles over land, memory, and sovereignty intersect with global Indigenous struggles.
Guest Editor
Umniya Najaer, Ph.D., is an interdisciplinary poet, essayist, and Black Studies scholar. Her work is guided by a reverence for the planet and a commitment to opposing systems of dehumanization and brutality. Recent publications include "Armeika" and "Dear Alice."
