Cafeteria Manager Trainee
About the Role
The Child Nutrition Manager Trainee position is designed to provide the knowledge and experience required for advancement to a manager position. Under the direction of experienced personnel, the trainee will receive training and perform duties in operating a school cafeteria, maintaining State and Federal standards, and implementing School Board policies and Child Nutrition procedures.
Responsibilities
- Learn various manager functions while in training.
- Aid in daily maintenance of perpetual and physical inventory and monthly submissions.
- Apply knowledge of planning, preparing, and serving a large variety of food, equipment, and methods used in food preparation and service.
- Assist the manager in supervising food preparation, portion control, and serving procedures.
- Assist all other Food Service Workers as needed to maintain performance standards and achieve program objectives.
- Maintain sanitary work areas, including personal cleanliness, food handling, storage, preparation, and clean-up.
- Ensure correct procedures for receiving and storing food supplies.
- Apply knowledge of food values, nutrition, health, sanitary, and safety practices.
- Follow the countywide plan to serve economical, nutritious, and attractive meals.
- Assist in preparation, service, and clean-up as needed.
- Assist the manager in executing proper procedures for checking all equipment throughout the training period.
- Serve as an apprentice to the manager for training and promotional purposes.
- Report any irregularities with food or personnel to the manager.
- Act as manager when the manager is absent and agree to move to a manager position if needed.
- Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees.
- Assume responsibility for professional growth and development, staying current with literature, research, and maintaining required licensure/qualifications.
- Maintain responsibility for any district-owned fixed asset assigned and ensure appropriate use.
- Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director, or established by district policy.
- Read, understand, and abide by the Employee Conduct Policy, district, state, and federal policies, and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
- One year of experience with RCSD preparing and serving food to large groups.
- Serv-Safe Certification.
- Pass an agility test and background check.
- Complete the interview process with the Child Nutrition Director to be accepted into the Trainee Program.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a school cafeteria or two years of management experience in a hospital, restaurant, or other foodservice setting.

- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using equipment such as a keyboard and video display terminal.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch, or crawl.
- Must regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to stand for up to two hours at a time, stoop and bend, reach and grasp objects, have manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
- Must have the ability to hear, communicate orally, push and pull carts, use a keyboard, proofread documents, and use a video display terminal.
- Specific vision abilities required include close and color vision.
