About the role
The Café Shift Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of Edmonds Café by providing consistent, high-quality customer service and ensuring café standards are upheld during each shift. This role is hands-on and service-focused, with responsibilities that include preparing coffee and beverages, assisting with food service, operating the point-of-sale system, maintaining a clean and safe workspace, and supporting opening and closing procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver excellent customer service by engaging with guests and responding to customer needs
- Operate the point-of-sale system, follow drink recipes, and prepare menu items including artisanal coffee beverages, beer, wine, and food
- Maintain cleanliness of the café, service areas, and workstations, including completing closing duties at the end of each shift
- Follow Edmonds Café operational policies and procedures, including payment handling, safety, and security standards
- Comply with all local, state, and federal health and sanitation regulations
- Follow café liquor license requirements and policies related to beer and wine sales, service, and consumption
- Aid in team leadership by assisting with opening and closing duties as scheduled, supporting training and onboarding of student workers, providing day-to-day guidance and support to student workers during shifts, and communicating shift updates and notes to management
- Support inventory and compliance needs to ensure smooth and efficient café operations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a cafe or restaurant environment
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring student employees or volunteers
- Access to reliable transportation
- RBS server certification is ideal, not required
- Strong customer service, interpersonal communication, and multitasking skills
- Experience with guest service standards, point-of-sale systems, and inventory processes preferred
Compensation and Benefits
- FLSA Status: Non-exempt, part-time (up to 20 hours per week)
- Pay range: $24 - $25 paid hourly, eligible for overtime
- Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications
- This role is not eligible for group health benefits or retirement
Working Conditions
- This role regularly requires work on evenings, weekends, and some holidays
- Hours may vary from week to week depending on organizational needs
- The ideal candidate will be able to work flexible hours that include evenings
- This is a fast-paced environment with extended periods of standing or walking, up to 6-8 hours per workday
- In addition, I-House has stairs that you may need to climb often and quickly in this position
