About the Role

Our client, a leading energy and utilities provider, is seeking a CAD/Mechanical Designer/Drafter IV to join their team. This individual will create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models supporting gas utility facilities and infrastructure projects. The designer will translate field measurements, survey information, engineering requirements, and technical specifications into accurate construction, permitting, and project closeout drawings.

12-month contract (August 17, 2026–August 17, 2027) · San Diego, California · Onsite

Core Responsibilities

  • Create and update sketches, working drawings, construction drawings, permit drawings, and contract documents using CAD software
  • Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for gas facilities and related infrastructure projects
  • Use AutoCAD Plant 3D and/or Civil 3D to create facility layouts, isometric drawings, and reusable building blocks
  • Translate field measurements, survey data, existing conditions, and engineering requirements into accurate technical drawings
  • Produce designs supporting new construction, existing facilities, retrofits, permitting, and project closeout activities
  • Review engineering drawings, blueprints, data sheets, customer requirements, and supplier specifications to ensure design accuracy
  • Coordinate with field personnel, engineers, designers, and project stakeholders to resolve design questions and incorporate project updates

Required Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of professional CAD, mechanical design, drafting, or related design experience
  • Advanced experience creating both 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Strong hands-on experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D and/or Civil 3D
  • Experience creating isometric drawings and building blocks within Plant 3D
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, data sheets, and detailed technical specifications
  • Knowledge of drafting techniques, engineering concepts, and technical terminology
  • Experience translating field measurements or survey information into accurate technical designs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting a gas, electric, or other utility organization
  • Experience designing gas facilities, pipelines, plants, or related utility infrastructure
  • Experience preparing construction, permitting, retrofit, and project closeout drawings
  • Surveying knowledge and experience interpreting survey measurements or mapping data
  • Formal AutoCAD or 3D CAD training
  • Experience developing original designs from scratch in addition to updating existing drawings

Compensation

Pay Range: $48–$54 per hour. Final compensation may vary based on factors including background, knowledge, skills, and location. We comply with local wage minimums.
