Cable Splicer - Underground (Withlacoochee River Electric)
About the role
The Underground Cable Splicer is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This position requires the ability to lead a crew, perform rigorous physical labor, and operate various pieces of equipment safely.
Responsibilities
- Lead the crew and represent the company in the absence of the foreman.
- Conduct pre-job briefings and inspect the work of crew members.
- Promote safety at all times, especially when working with energized high voltage systems.
- Operate a backhoe and maintain company equipment.
- Identify primary and secondary voltages, understand grounding procedures, and know how to obtain a one-shot on a recloser.
- Work in confined spaces, install and remove personal protective equipment (PPE), and properly phase out lines using phasing sticks.
- Plan safe work based on job prints or work orders, terminate different sizes of cable, and inspect rubber goods.
- Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
Requirements
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
- Understands flag and tag procedures.
- Has safe driving techniques.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Able to use hand tools on a continuous basis.
- Able to be exposed to dirt and power on a daily basis.
- Knowledgeable in identifying underground utility locates.
- Knowledgeable in tools for terminating cable.
- Knowledgeable in troubleshooting underground circuits.
- Able to identify unforeseen obstacles that would hinder safety or production.
- Able to switch and splice.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Knowledgeable in all aspects of underground distribution.
- Knowledgeable in underground switching procedures.
Other Requirements
- One to three years of experience is required.
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
- Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies.
- Willing to work over-time when requested.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle to feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud, and the position is performed in outside weather conditions.
