Responsibilities
- Splices high voltage and secondary network systems (power cables used in underground distribution)
- Install, splice and terminate high voltage at 13.2kV and below
- Locate and repair cable faults of all kinds
- Perform all other underground work involving construction, maintenance, repair and routine inspection
- Operate all tools and equipment pertaining to underground distribution
- Identify and handle all materials and components associated with underground residential distribution (URD)
- Identify and handle all materials and components associated with lead cable work
- Read and interpret various underground-related prints and drawings
- Splice lead cable, 350 and 500 MCM, including straight lead splices, wye lead splices, up to quad lead splices
- Communicate with employees, other departments and Line Department personnel to ensure proper understanding of job procedures and daily activities
- Communicate with customers to promote a positive awareness of BWL responsibility
Requirements
- Journey worker certification as Cable Splicer and experience working in high voltage and secondary network systems
- Respirator certified to work in confined spaces
- Work with asbestos and lead
- Annual physical and monitoring for blood lead levels
- Commercial Driver’s License (cdl)
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Successfully complete the State of Michigan written portion of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) examination and pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam within six months of hire
- Pass the Michigan CDL skills/road test within six months of hire
- Subject to DOT requirements including random testing for controlled substances & alcohol
Skills
- Ability to operate jackhammer and various tools and materials weighing up to 75 lbs
- Ability to operate various types of trucks and equipment
- Ability to sit in awkward positions about 45% of the time and work in trenches, handholes, vaults, and access openings
- Ability to stand on uneven terrain about 35% of the time
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain 25% of time
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs and ramps
- Good vision to distinguish colors for wire coding
- Good hearing to troubleshoot localized sounds
