About the role
Set up, rack, splice, transfer, repair, rearrange, bond, pressurize, and test aerial, underground, and buried cable. Mount, cut-in, and repair cable terminal and load coil cases. Rearrange service drops, aerial, and buried jumper wire and step poles. Operate company vehicles as required. Perform such work under minimum supervision.
Responsibilities
- Handle a variety of tasks with general guidelines for transfers, line cuts, and cable rearrangements.
- Climb ladders and poles, work at heights in boom trucks, and enter tunnels, buildings, trenches, crawl spaces, and manholes to place materials.
- Work with small hand tools, mechanical equipment, test equipment, and color-coded or tone-identified wires to connect wires and cables to telephone equipment.
- Splice cables by twisting, soldering, or using prescribed wire connectors (aerial, underground, buried, submarine, building, multiple conductor, coaxial, and other wire).
- Cover conductors with insulating materials and place/connect cable terminals and NIDS.
- Perform frequent pushing, pulling, and lifting of moderate to heavy objects.
- Read and interpret cut sheets and work order prints to complete assignments.
- Maintain detailed written records of work activity.
- Place hermetically sealed, free-breathing, or encapsulated splice closures.
- Use electrical test equipment to verify and identify defective wire in cable.
- Perform cable acceptance tests to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Load tools and materials onto boom trucks, vans, or pick-up trucks and drive to work locations.
- Test for gas in manholes, remove water/debris, and test cable pressure systems and air-tight closures for leaks.
- Perform additional duties as required by the company.
Requirements
- Must meet minimum requirements in standard tests for the position as established by the company.
- First consideration: Experience as a Cable Splicer, OSP Construction Installer/Splicer, or equivalent (e.g., other telecommunications company experience) within the last ten years.
- Second consideration: Experience as a Communications Specialist, Customer Service Technician (I-III), Fiber Network Field Technician, Internal Communications Technician, Line Worker, Plant Construction Installer, Public Access Sales Technician, Collector/Maintainer, Public Communications Field Technician, Senior Communications Specialist, or Special Equipment Installer within the last ten years.
- Third consideration: Experience as a Buried Service Wire Technician, Equipment Maintainer, Equipment Installer, Frame Worker, or Frame Maintainer within the last ten years.
- Valid California Class “C” driver’s license at time of appointment; proficiency in operating manual-shift vehicles if required.
- May be required to obtain a California Class “A” driver’s license post-appointment (subject to random drug testing per DOT regulations).
- Must pass a Department of Justice criminal records check (fingerprinting) and continuous screening for serious/violent felonies.
- Ability to perceive color differences and distinguish audible tones/levels.
