About the role
The Central Services Technician II at Bronson Battle Creek is responsible for decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instrumentation. They must demonstrate knowledge of infection control and aseptic techniques, and possess certifications as a CRCST or CSPDT. This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, 2 years of experience in a reprocessing/sterilization department, and the ability to read, interpret, and apply information from various documents.
Responsibilities
- Identify disposable items needed for surgical cases and respond to clinical area needs.
- Utilize critical thinking to respond to surgical case needs.
- Practice within Reprocessing Department policies and procedures.
- Provide technical support for areas processing reusable items using sterilization or HLD.
- Set priorities, manage stress, and provide excellent customer service.
- Ensure processed items are disinfected or sterilized and safe for patient care.
- Operate and attend to a personal computer or CRT up to 40% of the time.
- Recognize, identify, and respond to issues arising throughout the shift to ensure safe patient care.
- Receive, handle, and process contaminated, reusable medical instrumentation and equipment.
- Inspect, test, and prepare basic surgical instrumentation for sterilization.
- Use various sterilization and HLD methods and safety processes.
- Store and distribute sterile instrumentation, supplies, equipment, case carts, exchange carts, and other items.
- Conduct an accurate inventory, establish par levels, and restock areas as required.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Accurately document work tasks and other related activities.
- Participate in continuing education and staff meetings.
- Collaborate with other team members and OR staff to ensure continuity and coordination of services.
- Act as a resource for other department team members and OR staff members.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- 2 years experience in a reprocessing/sterilization department
- Completion of organization, unit, and job-specific competencies within a reasonable orientation period
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information from documents including surgical schedules, sterilizer printouts, IFUs, policies, procedures, and other forms of written communication
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
- Ability to perform basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Ability to utilize computer programs including email, instrument-tracking programs, computer-based learning applications, EMR, and internet searches
- Ability to utilize and apply knowledge of surgical instrumentation, medical terminology, human anatomy, microbiology, sterilization, and disinfection practices, and aseptic technique
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull, or move bulky or awkward items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to operate and maintain various forms of cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, assembly, inspection, or sterilization equipment
- Ability to rotate to all areas of a Sterile Processing/Central Services Department
- Ability to provide technical support for areas that also process reusable items using sterilization or HLD
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information including knowledge of HIPAA and other appropriate regulations and laws
- Ability to serve as a preceptor for new employees and act as a resource person for other Sterile Processing or Operating Room customers
- Ability to act as a team leader when needed
- Ability to demonstrate a positive work attitude
Qualifications
- Certification as a CRCST through IAHCSMM or as a CSPDT through CBSPD
