About the role

The Buyer II is a key position supporting company goals of profitability, return-on-investment, inventory turnover, and accident prevention. This role combines purchasing and materials planning to ensure best value, delivery performance, and quality for goods, services, and production materials. The Buyer II researches market forces affecting cost and delivery for assigned commodities.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety in all job aspects and company meetings.
  • Enter and update supply chain parameters, purchase orders, and related information in the JDE ERP system.
  • Evaluate and manage exception reports weekly.
  • Support morning production meetings with prepared answers and follow up on items needing additional effort.
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, freight terms, and other cost-related issues with suppliers; obtain manager approval before awarding business.
  • Ensure pricing and supplier information is updated in the JDE ERP system.
  • Market test assigned commodities with alternative suppliers via RFQ and source new suppliers as needed.
  • Provide longer-term forecasts or supplier agreements under the Purchasing Director’s direction.
  • Work with Bush Hog Quality to collect 8D information and follow up on supplier corrective actions when issues occur.
  • Support economical launch of new products through the Stage Gate process, ensuring production material passes ISIR if required and suppliers agree with launch volumes and timing.
  • Complete sourcing decisions in a timely manner, ensuring initial pricing is in place and suppliers are informed and onboard to support launches.
  • Manage inventory levels to support company objectives.
  • Track and graph delivery performance using the JDE open order report; define root causes and take corrective action for past-due orders at branch plants 9550 and 9551.
  • Identify and execute savings projects to support company objectives.
  • Identify PPV issues and eliminate negative variances where possible; support accurate standard cost setting.
  • Track and graph PPV actual versus budget goal; submit price changes via Price Change Authorization form for manager approval.
  • Maintain high professionalism in all internal and external business dealings.
  • Minimize or eliminate risk and cost exposure using approved contractual instruments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Competency or willingness to become competent in the JDE ERP system.
  • Ability to handle complex component/commodity purchases for production material, service material, and MRO items (high SKU/Supplier count, medium dollar expenditure and risk).
  • Annual purchased dollar volume between $3.0 million and $10 million.
  • Basic understanding of ERP theory and concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring long-term company benefits.
  • Proficiency in computers, report retrieval, and data analysis; basic Microsoft Office skills.
  • Knowledge of JD Edwards system is a plus.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong reasoning, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work overtime, under pressure, under short deadlines, and on weekends/holidays as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years in supply chain (purchasing, scheduling, etc.), is a plus.
  • In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of manufacturing experience with at least 5 years in supply chain is acceptable.
  • Professional supply chain certification or progress toward certification (e.g., CPIM, CPSM) is a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Use of standard office equipment; frequent sitting and walking through manufacturing plant with stairs.
  • Constant stooping and reaching; ability to lift 50 pounds and organize permanent file records.
  • Minimal business travel to key suppliers is occasionally required.
