About the role
The Buyer I is an entry-level position in the professional Buyer series. Under general supervision, this role coordinates purchasing activities to meet forecasts and commitments, processes purchase requisitions, and places orders based on MRP requirements. The Buyer I verifies price and delivery dates within established contracts but rarely negotiates. They may also administer the EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) program and expedite items to meet production requirements.
Responsibilities
- Utilize a Computerized MRP system to ensure purchase orders are created and reviewed in a timely and accurate manner, supporting manufacturing requirements.
- Expedite items on the Backlog Report to ensure report integrity and facilitate communication between customer service and the warehouse.
- Routinely interact and communicate with suppliers to ensure purchase order details (manufacture number, description, pricing) and delivery requirements are clearly defined.
- Maintain delivery confirmation details in the computer system.
- Document and process defective materials that do not meet company standards.
- Review and resolve receiving and invoice discrepancies to ensure timely supplier payments.
- Review open requirements, expedite, delay, or cancel orders as necessary.
- Track supplier OTTR, OTIF, and Lead Time, ensuring MOQ equals EOQ.
- Engage with suppliers to resolve supply solvency issues.
- Act as the first line of defense for price increases, leveraging the broader team to mitigate increases.
- Attend Karrass Negotiation Skills training within the first year of hire.
Requirements
- Analytical and highly motivated individual with acute attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize, manage, and meet deadlines for multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated ability in computer operations, specifically Microsoft Office, data mining, and Crystal Reports.
- Problem-solving skills, including short/long-term corrective action resolution, root cause analysis, and the 5 Whys principle.
- Beginner to intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, queries, and macros.
Qualifications
- No previous buying experience required.
- An Associate’s degree or higher may substitute for purchasing experience.
- Experience and working knowledge in accounting preferred but not required.
- Experience with supplier and vendor management preferred but not required.
- Negotiation skills or experience preferred but not required.
Work Environment
- Primarily an office work environment; occasional work on the production floor.
