About the role
The Business Strategy and Planning Director – Chief of Staff is a strategic and operational partner to the leadership team, responsible for driving execution, accountability, and organizational effectiveness across the department. This role leads team operating rhythms, including business reviews, team and leadership meetings; oversees strategic initiatives and the broader team book of work to ensure progress and alignment; manages departmental budgeting and workforce planning in partnership with Finance; and develops executive communications that translate team activities into clear outcomes for senior leadership. The ideal candidate is highly organized, proactive, and experienced in research-driven environments, with the ability to provide visibility into priorities, identify risks, and enable effective decision-making.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position is based in San Antonio, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Responsibilities
- Drives the development and coordination of components within the overarching strategy for the Function.
- Works with executive management to establish strategic and operational framework that establishes enables short and long-term business goals and key results.
- Develops specific processes to manage the business strategic and operational planning process.
- Drives the alignment of business process and frameworks to enterprise strategy, process and framework.
- Partners with senior-level leaders across functions and channels to develop near- and long-term visions and roadmaps and works with business leaders to manage transition from strategy to execution.
- Maintains responsibility of integration of change management plans, project documentation and strategies for large, complex business specific initiatives that often impact the organization and/or enterprise.
- Identifies strengths and weaknesses to evaluate operational effectiveness by establishing best practices and management routines to address gaps.
- Guides team members as they perform research and analysis.
- Supports executive leadership by leading the design, coordination, and governance of the annual strategic planning and operational planning processes.
- Leads and motivates cross-functional team members in strategy and operational plan development and implementation.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
- Develop and deliver executive-level communications, presentations, business reviews, and leadership updates that clearly convey team priorities, outcomes, risks, and strategic recommendations.
- Manage the department's annual budget and ongoing financial planning processes, partnering closely with Finance to monitor spend, forecast expenses, and support effective resource allocation.
- Lead workforce planning activities, including headcount forecasting, organizational planning, and talent investment decisions to align resources with business priorities and growth objectives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
- 8 years of experience influencing and managing communication to senior executives, internal colleagues through concise, official and regular updates on status, progress, strategies and roadmaps.
- Experience with business planning consultation to include developing business strategy for short-term and/or long-term goals.
- Extensive experience in Project Management.
- Strong business acumen in financial services or related industry, and a proven ability to balance strategic thinking with practical implementation skills.
- Experience working with clients/customers to realize business issues and develop a strategy for the business's direction from the gathered insights.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $114,080 – $218,030. Compensation is based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
