UMB School of Dentistry is seeking a Business Operations Manager to oversee payroll operations and support HR-related matters for nearly 400 employees, including 140 full-time faculty. This is a hybrid role with two telework days per week and is designated as an essential position.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, lead, train, and mentor Business Operations Specialists, including hiring, retention, career coaching, professional development, and performance reviews.
- Build a cohesive team to achieve unit goals and establish payroll processing objectives.
- Manage day-to-day payroll operations, including processing, reconciliation, commitment accounting, adjustments, overpayments, leave adjustments, and timesheets.
- Monitor and resolve payroll discrepancies, investigate issues, and ensure accuracy.
- Oversee visa processing and generate payroll and system reports.
- Review and approve payroll reconciliation, partnering with Campus Financial Services for compliance.
- Implement process improvements to create payroll efficiencies.
- Manage school-wide payroll communications and year-end payroll processing for faculty.
- Process, track, monitor, and audit monthly paper timesheets for fellows, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
- Address employee payroll concerns and provide excellent customer service.
- Oversee leave management, including FML, parental leave, advance sick leave, accident leave, and collegial leave.
- Review and approve leave accrual reports and provide guidance on family/medical leave, ADA, and paid family medical leave.
- Interpret SOD and UMB policies (e.g., FMLA, advance sick leave) for HR transactions and payroll processing.
- Manage employee and labor relations matters, including policy interpretation, internal investigations, and grievance processes.
- Advise faculty and staff on HR/payroll issues and report findings to the Director of HR and Payroll.
- Serve as an advisor on HR and payroll operations and assist leadership with strategic goals.
- Co-facilitate new employee onboarding and serve as backup for offboarding.
- Ensure HR transaction accuracy, rectify errors, and approve HR transactions in the system.
- Communicate HR policies, provide problem resolution, and escalate issues as needed.
- Manage HR/payroll transaction logs and conduct regular payroll audits.
- Oversee faculty and staff job postings on the UMSOD website.
- Serve as backup to the Director of HR and Payroll and assist with recruitments.
- Participate in UMSOD and campus-wide committees and initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality of HR, payroll, and employee data.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, or a related field.
- Five years of business-related experience, with at least two years in human resources, payroll, finance, facility operations, or research administration.
- Two years of direct supervisory experience, including personnel recruitment, training, and professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of hands-on supervisory experience.
- HR and employee/labor relations experience.
- Payroll experience with a strong understanding of processing and complex calculations.
- Experience in higher education.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

Pay
$94,000 - $105,000, commensurate with education and experience.
