We are seeking a motivated Business Intelligence Analyst to join our growing analytics team. This role is designed for someone eager to build hands-on experience with modern data visualization and analytics tools on real infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Report and Dashboard Development
- Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards under the direction of senior team members, following established team standards for data modeling and design.
- Write and troubleshoot SQL queries to extract, join, and validate data from client and internal source systems.
- Assist in developing data models, measures, and calculated columns using DAX and Power Query.
- Apply design principles for layout, color, and readability so dashboards are clear, intuitive, and consistent with Garver standards.
- Support ongoing maintenance of existing reports, including scheduled refreshes, issue resolution, and enhancement requests.
- Data Preparation and Quality
- Gather, clean, transform, and validate data from multiple sources, including spreadsheets, databases, ERP systems, project management platforms, and GIS data.
- Perform quality checks to confirm the accuracy and integrity of data and calculations before deliverables go to review.
- Document data sources, transformation logic, assumptions, and known limitations.
- Identify data discrepancies and anomalies, raise them promptly, and help research root causes.
- Project and Client Support
- Complete assigned project tasks within budgeted hours and schedule, tracking your own progress and communicating status and obstacles early.
- Participate in requirements gathering sessions and client working meetings, capturing notes and documenting requests.
- Assist in preparing materials for client presentations, program reporting, and training sessions.
- Coordinate with engineering staff and project managers to understand the data behind the deliverable.
- Learning and Development
- Build technical skills through mentoring, structured training, certifications, and hands-on project experience.
- Learn Garver's markets — transportation, aviation, water, buildings, and federal — and how analytics supports infrastructure planning and delivery.
- Contribute to team knowledge sharing, standards documentation, and process improvement ideas.
- Stay current on business intelligence and data visualization best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of professional experience in analytics, business intelligence, or a related role. Internships, co-ops, and substantial academic or personal projects count.
- Working knowledge of Power BI or a comparable data visualization tool such as Tableau.
- Foundational SQL skills, including the ability to write and modify queries with joins, filters, and aggregations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and working with large data sets.
- Strong attention to detail and a habit of checking your own work.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to ask good questions and explain what you built.
- Ability to take direction, manage assigned deadlines, and collaborate as part of a project team.
- Curiosity and a demonstrated willingness to learn new tools and subject matter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or reporting.
- Experience with DAX and Power Query/M.
- Exposure to data modeling concepts such as star schemas, relationships, and dimensional design.
- Familiarity with Python, R, or another scripting language for data preparation and analysis.
- Exposure to GIS tools such as ArcGIS, or interest in geospatial data.
- Interest in the civil engineering and infrastructure industry, particularly transportation, aviation, or water.
- An eye for graphic design and data storytelling.
- Familiarity with descriptive and diagnostic analytics, and interest in growing toward predictive and prescriptive work.
