About the Role

Trinseo is a global materials company at the intersection of people, technology, and customers, specializing in plastics and latex binders. We are seeking a Business Development Manager - Medical to identify, position, and develop new high-value opportunities in the medical market. This role involves collaborating with established and start-up brand owners and customers to create a continuous pipeline of projects for sustainable and profitable growth. The Business Development Manager will act as a key interface between brand owners and Trinseo’s technical and commercial functions, leading projects from ideation to start-of-production.

30-40% domestic travel within the U.S. is expected for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, position, and develop new high-value opportunities in the medical market.
  • Create a continuous pipeline of opportunities by working with key or developmental brand owners/OEM customers (established and start-up companies).
  • Search and understand current and future market needs, identify key players, define participation plans (customer prioritization, network mapping), and implement Trinseo’s positioning.
  • Prioritize and lead developmental projects from advanced development (ideation) to implementation (start-of-production).
  • Work closely with T&I and sales teams to ensure successful product trials, validation, and nomination for prioritized applications.
  • Serve as a key interface between brand owners/OEMs and Trinseo’s technical and commercial functions.
  • Identify, prioritize, and organize key projects for Trinseo, including project planning with goals, milestones, and network maps to offer appropriate solutions.
  • Initiate requests for product or technology development as needed.
  • Manage the opportunity pipeline accurately and dynamically through SalesForce (SFDC).
  • Develop and build close relationships with contacts and departments influencing material choice within medical OEMs, including internal/external customers, influencers, decision-makers, and sponsors in design, material engineering, advanced development, innovation, and project management.
  • Maintain and update Account Plans for allocated OEMs, shaping each new opportunity and tracking progress toward commercialization.
  • Develop and maintain market intelligence by assessing, understanding, and proactively analyzing market trends, customer organization and strategy, current/future needs, and competitor activities.
  • Monitor and report details of relevant plastics applications for future platforms, including technology, products, development partners, and molders.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Commercial, and T&I teams to ensure readiness for future challenges with the right products, keeping Trinseo ahead at key OEMs.

Qualifications

  • Education: BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related scientific field.
  • Experience: 10+ years in the following areas:
    • Medical Market – Demonstrated application and business development skills.
    • Engineering Plastics Market.
    • Project Management / Business Development / Application Development.
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of material performance (polymer and material engineering), customer functional and material requirements, market trends, and key medical application requirements.
  • Behavioral Skills:
    • Market/customer orientation.
    • Understanding of work processes and tools for effective project management and informal team leadership, including strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
    • Ability to understand and communicate across different cultural styles (American, European, and Asian).
    • Strategic and tactical thinking, with the ability to gather input and gain consensus.
    • Critical thinking combined with open and constructive behavior.
    • Result- and value-oriented mindset.
    • Ability to manage stress in a dynamic and demanding market segment while maintaining work-life balance.
  • Communication:
    • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is mandatory.
    • Ability to communicate strategic plans, needs, and progress clearly at various organizational levels.
    • Flexibility in working hours (e.g., early or late internal conference calls with other regions).

Challenges

  • Balancing actions at OEMs (where initial requirements are defined) and Tiers (where validation and final decisions are typically made).
  • Combining project management skills (organizing product validation in the lab), marketing skills (understanding future customer needs), and "value selling" skills (promoting and obtaining product nominations).
  • Integrating strategic thinking with operational execution.
  • Coordinating new targets through OEMs to tier molders.
  • Overcoming key competitors already established in the market.
