About the Role
As an integral part of the team and contact person for the Care Center, the Business Associate is responsible for the business aspects of a patient's stay, the flow of information throughout the unit and between members of the patient care team, as well as patient-focused care within the Care Center.
Responsibilities
- Provides patient services in a manner which supports the patient's rights and dignity.
- Provides information in a considerate and respectful manner.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Ensures patient privacy by providing appropriate screening in an appropriate environment.
- Refers questions from patients and families to appropriate personnel.
- Respects the rights of patients and families to make informed health care decisions.
- Admits patients to the care center.
- Registers patients for procedures.
- Obtains and validates demographic and insurance data.
- Discusses state mandatory regulations and what is to be expected upon admission.
- Verifies and enters demographic and insurance information.
- Collects deposits and precertifications, obtains authorization when necessary.
- Conducts patient registration utilizing a computerized system.
- Conducts intake of new patients.
- Enters financial information on the computer.
- Reviews proof of family income for self-pay patients and assigns to sliding fee category.
- Ensures accurate and complete financial, demographic, and insurance information.
- Registers patients, generating the medical record, MR#, and account #.
- Identifies and corrects inaccurate registration information, following up as necessary with HIM.
- Maintains census and charge information.
- Assigns beds to incoming patients.
- Updates the Admissions, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) System.
- Compiles information and performs data entry for charge capture.
- Schedules appropriate tests, medical procedures, and follow-up appointments.
- Maintains required records of admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths.
- Prepares various records and charts as required by normal patient unit clerical activities.
- Schedules appointments and arranges transportation for patients leaving the unit for diagnostic testing and therapy.
- Notifies Admitting, Nutrition, and other departments as required of pending admissions, discharges, transfers, and changes in patient status and needs.
- Makes arrangements related to patient discharge, such as clinic appointments, referrals, valuables retrieval, and transportation.
- Performs secretarial duties on the patient care unit.
- Interacts with patients and visitors.
- Prepares and maintains all patient charts from admission through discharge.
- Ensures all patient charts are complete and properly identified.
- Performs other secretarial duties as directed by the Manager or charge designee.
- Ensures that all demographic and insurance information is verified and accurately entered into the appropriate hospital systems.
- Files all records designated for chart storage.
- Assists patients with guest services.
- Arranges/assists with rental of television and telephone services.
- Contacts Security to secure valuables.
- Assists with patient mail and deliveries.
- Receives and maintains business office and inventory for the care center.
- Picks up and distributes mail accordingly.
- Maintains the department's file system.
- Prepares new files and labels.
- Maintains inventory of office supplies and equipment.
- Orders office and patient care supplies utilizing the BIS/SAP system.
- Participates in the implementation of the treatment plan developed by the professional staff, patient, and family.
- Assists other staff members in providing support for patient care activities.
- Completes assignments within established time frames.
- Ensures that all schedules are available and makes notations on schedules as appropriate.
- Gives report to the oncoming Business Associates.
- Participates in the orientation of new Business Associates.
- Escalates problems to appropriate personnel for resolution as necessary.
- Verifies insurance eligibility with third-party payors, employers, and other sources.
- Participates actively as a member of the health care team.
- Complies with written policies and procedures.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
- Performs job functions in a manner that promotes efficient use of resources.
- Participates in staff and departmental meetings.
- Participates in educational activities.
- Participates in the orientation of new personnel.
- Completes mandatory educational programs annually online.
- Participates in in-service and continuing education programs appropriate to the role.
- Complies with departmental and human resources standards.
- Adheres to department dress code.

- Adheres to hospital and departmental standards for attendance and punctuality.

Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the care center.
- 6-9 months of health care-related experience to become familiar with health care policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of keyboarding and basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Successful completion of Business Associate training program and competency-based orientation.
- Knowledge of insurance.
Pay
Hourly Rate: $28.00
Schedule
- Work Shift: Evening
- Work Days: Alternate weekends
- Scheduled Hours: 3 PM - 11:30 PM
- Scheduled Daily Hours: 7.5 hours
