About the role
The Business Analyst supports the Office of Technology, Innovation and Industry Relations (OTIIR) in advancing research translation, strengthening intellectual property and innovation commercialization pathways, and expanding industry and investor engagement.
Responsibilities
- Conduct early-stage market and competitive landscape analyses for UC Merced technologies; assess market size, technology trends, competitor offerings, and potential application areas; prepare reports and briefs used in commercialization decision-making.
- Aid in identifying prospective partners, investors, and collaborators.
- Develop non-confidential marketing summaries, technology briefs, and outreach materials; support targeted marketing campaigns; generate lists of potential licensees and industry/investor contacts; coordinate support outreach cadences and follow-up.
- Provide high-quality, responsive support to faculty innovators and research teams by serving as a reliable point of contact for inquiries related to technology maturation, market analysis requests, commercialization activities, and innovation ecosystem programs.
- Affirm coordinated, accurate, and timely information by gathering required details, routing questions to appropriate OTIIR staff, maintaining clear communication and tracking follow-up actions.
- Affirm execution of NSF-funded and internal OTIIR initiatives—including workshops, trainings, capacity building programs, technology maturation programs, entrepreneurial training events, industry and investor meetings, pitch sessions, and other education and outreach activities—by supporting scheduling, logistics, documentation, materials preparation, and progress tracking across projects.
- Maintain commercialization, partnership, investor engagement, and entrepreneurial training data and standard operating procedures for OTIIR; prepare dashboards and reports for leadership and external stakeholders; ensure data quality, records management, and consistent documentation across systems.
- Provide operational support to OTIIR, including scheduling, document preparation, procurement support, handling inquiries, maintaining shared office resources, coordinating meeting logistics, supporting process improvements for office efficiency, and other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice Chancellor, OTIIR.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in science, technology, engineering, marketing, business, or related areas.
- Strong quantitative skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to confront and clarify issues.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills, and the ability to correctly identify real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.

Pay
The hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.79 to $33.14.
Schedule
This position currently has a 3 - 4 days per week (on campus) work modality expectation. Out of area applicants will not be considered unless they relocate to a commutable area without funding from the university. This is a multi-year, renewable contract position.
