Bus Safety Assistant
About the role
Assists the bus driver/vendor driver in providing safe and efficient transportation for students. Attends to the physical, medical, and/or behavioral needs of students as outlined in the Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
Responsibilities
- Assists the bus driver/vendor driver in transporting students to and from school.
- Attends to the physical, medical, and/or behavioral needs of students as outlined in IEP’s, health care plans, or information received from the school system.
- Might include loading and unloading of equipment, assisting students on and off the bus or vehicle including using lifts, as required, operating medical apparatus, etc.
- Uses school system approved methods to maintain order on the school bus/vendor vehicle.
- Notifies school based administrators of discipline problems on bus/vendor vehicle.
- Assists with emergency evacuation and safety drills for school transportation.
- Collaborates with school system staff to monitor progress and implement components of the IEP as they relate to safe and effective transportation.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Within sixty days of employment, attend and pass medical apparatus training.
Skills
Critical thinking and problem solving skills; Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback; Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.
